Studio Ghibli-Top 3

For those of you who are new to the world of Studio Ghibli, I’ll share some knowledge.

Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation house. The original intention for Studio Ghibli was to produce feature films based on original work, although now the studio has produced a lot more than just that, with a TV film, numerous short films and TV commercials all on top of its 20 feature films.

Studio Ghibli has enjoyed massive success with many of its films, with the following 9 of their feature length films amongst the twenty highest grossing anime films of all time:

  1. Spirited Away
  2.  Howl’s Moving Castle
  3. Ponyo
  4. Princess Mononoke
  5. Arrietty
  6. The Wind Rises
  7. Tales from Earthsea
  8. From Up on Poppy Hill
  9. The Cat Returns

The studio’s first real Box Office success was for Kiki’s Delivery Service which became the highest grossing film of 1989 in Japan. However, Studio Ghibli’s biggest success came with their 2001 release of feature film Spirited Away, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Toshio Suzuki. Spirited Away became the highest grossing film ever released in Japan!

Studio Ghibli films are certainly one of a kind. They are both completely bonkers and absolutely adorable all wrapped into one!

Hayao Miyazaki certainly has a talent for creating lovable characters.

Lets dive into my top 3

.   .   .

Genre: Adventure, Family, Fantasy

Review: Kiki’s Delivery Service is a gorgeously traditional hand drawn animation, with a charming setting and interesting characters. The plot is simple allowing for a bigger targeted audience. I throughly enjoyed this film; It was both lighthearted and an easy watch.

Rating: 2.5 stars

Genre: Adventure, Family, Fantasy

Review: Spirited Away is one of those films no matter how many times you have watched it, in your childhood or present time, that is always as enchanting as the first time. If you are not familiar with strange tales (Or studio Ghibli’s wacky creations in general) you may find this film slightly overwhelming, however in my opinion it is truly nothing short of breathtaking and hopefully you will eventually come to love it. (Like i do!)

Rating: 4 stars

Which brings us to my top most favourite Studio Ghibli creation.

.   .   .

“A young girl is forced to toil in her parents’ hat shop and her only joy is in her occasional meetings with a handsome stranger, Howl the wizard. When a witch sees her happiness, she curses her to become old in a jealous rage. Ashamed and afraid, she flees to Howl’s magic moving castle. Will Howl see her for who she really is?”

Genre: Adventure, Family, Fantasy, Romance

Review: Howl’s Moving Castle is just stunning. It is a mysterious film that will remain mysterious even after the film ends! Young children may find this film hard to follow, but for adults this is the holy grail of all things animation. The characters brilliant and definitely contribute to why i love this film so much, each one very different and just as lovable as the last.

Rating: 4.5 stars

Hope you enjoyed.

Love, Meg x
